Travellers defy notice to quit illegal camp in Shifnal
Travellers have defied a notice for them to move on after setting up an illegal camp on the outskirts of a Shropshire market town.
Six caravans moved onto land off the Newport Road in Shifnal, near to Admirals Close.
But despite being served with a notice to move on Wednesday, the vehicles were still in place on the site last night.
Shropshire Councillor for Shifnal north, Kevin Turley, said: "We're hoping to get them moved along.
"The gipsy liaison officer at Shropshire Council has served them their notice to move on. As soon as they are spotted it is logged with Shropshire Council.
"They were served notice on Wednesday lunchtime."
Although the travellers have not yet headed calls for them to move on, they are expected to leave the site shortly.
A spokesman for the Rural Watch in Shifnal and Albrighton, said: "These people were served notice to quit this piece of land by 3pm on Thursday. They did not move and on Thursday, legal proceedings were initiated by the gipsy liaison officer.
"This is just normal practice. We're always concerned about any site of travellers. We want them moved as soon as possible.
"The Rural Watch will be putting pressure on to get them moved, anything else we can be doing, we will be doing."
