Shropshire fundraiser speaks of the aftermath of Spanish rail tragedy

A woman from Shropshire has spoken of the change in atmosphere in a Spanish town in the aftermath of the train tragedy.

Rachel Winterflood, from Shifnal, was in the nearby town of Santiago de Compostela, fundraising for Severn Hospice, when the news broke about the Madrid to Ferrol train crash on Wednesday night.

Miss Winterflood said: "There is a festival on and everyone was packed into the main square and we were in a bar. Suddenly this news came through and everyone just left. There were people crying. The atmosphere changed so quickly."

Driver probe after Spanish train disaster

Miss Winterflood was in the town where she had been walking 800km in aid of Severn Hospice.

Miss Winterflood, who works in the Severn bar in Shifnal, said: "The atmosphere in the town is awful now. It is like there is no one here."
