A horsebox overturned on the M54 in Shropshire closing the motorway for more than two hours.
The accident happened between Junction 4 at Shifnal and Junction 3 at Albrighton at about 8.30pm yesterday.
Police had to escort a vet to the scene to deal with the distressed animal, which fell in the accident and suffered a leg injury.
There were no injuries to people in the accident but it is not yet known if the horse survived. A spokesman for the Motorway Police said officers were at the scene for almost two hours, after which they handed over to the Highways Agency.
The road was completely closed for a while then one lane remained closed.
Meanwhile, firefighters were also called to Cherry Way in Market Drayton at about 6pm yesterday to reports of a dog trapped in a car. However, the animal was released before the arrival of the crews.
