Oswestry's secondary school has been awarded £1 million towards its plans to open a new sixth form centre.

The cash windfall for the Marches School will allow it to buy the former Fairholme nursing home next to its site and transform it into a new sixth form in time for its opening in September.

The funding was announced after an application by the school, the county's first academy, to the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund proved successful.

Joanne Jones, business manager at The Marches School, said: "The fact that our bid was successful, in such a competitive market, clearly demonstrates how our plans are recognised nationally as a project which will have considerable benefits for both the school and wider community."

Work will begin on the building at the end of this month.
