Plans for £25k Shrewsbury skate park is given approval
A new £25,000 skate park is to be built in Shrewsbury after plans were approved.
Shropshire Council is behind the scheme to build a mini skate ramp at Shrewsbury Sports Village in Sundorne. Work is due to get under way on the new facility shortly – and is expected to take just over a month to complete.
It comes after Shropshire Council decided to scrap plans to revamp the skate park on Monkmoor Recreation Ground in 2011 due to budget cuts.
Council bosses said at the time the money needed to be spent on a facility that would benefit as many people as possible.
Following its decision not to build at Monkmoor, the council launched a Shrewsbury-wide consultation to find the best location for a new skate park.
Council chiefs said results from the survey showed the majority of residents wanted new skating facilities to be set up in Sundorne.
Four One Four, a company which specialises in building concrete skate parks, has been chosen to build the new mini skate ramp.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's cabinet member responsible for active and healthy lifestyles, said: "We are really pleased with the design and are confident that this is what young people and skaters want, and just as importantly where they want it.
"This was achieved by involving them at the very start, and will ensure that they use it. Four One Four is an excellent company, which has a lot of experience in building concrete skateparks.
"It also is keen to continue to work with young people to help them shape the design further."
Karen Burgoyne, Shropshire councillor for Sundorne, said: "It was really good to see those young people who will be actually using the skate ramp get directly involved in the project, from participating in discussions on location and design based on the funds available, to proactively obtaining quotes."
She added: "I look forward to seeing them enjoying the facility in the very near future."
The money to fund the building of the new skate park will come from the Leisure Facilities Strategy capital programme, funded from Shropshire Council's corporate resources.
