Vandals hit Market Drayton's revamped library precinct
Vandals made a 'mess' of an area in Market Drayton town centre which is currently undergoing an £80,000 revamp, it emerged today.
Police say hanging baskets and shop banners were torn down, while safety barriers and paving blocks were thrown about during the incident.
It happened on Tuesday night in the area by Market Drayton Library.
Police say a group of youths were spotted by members of the public in the area and are appealing for any information over the incident.
Councillors in the town have expressed their disappointment at the news and say there is an 'ongoing' problem with misbehaving youths in the town centre.
Councillor Roger Hughes, Shropshire Council member for Market Drayton West, said: "It was quite a mess. We have an ongoing problem with kids in the town centre."
Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We had two calls from members of the public on Tuesday night.
"We had reports of vandalism which occurred sometime between 9pm and 9.45pm in Cheshire Street.
"It was mainly at the building site next to the library.
"It was reported that safety barriers and paving blocks were thrown about. A hanging basket was pulled down, as well as some kind of banner belonging to a shop.
"It was reported a group of youths aged between 12 and 16 had been seen at the location."
