Newport Knights rising to 'Movember' charity challenge

A roller hockey team from Newport might raise an eyebrow or two when they play their next match – as every player will be sporting a bushy moustache.

Members of Newport Knights have decided to let nature take its course by not shaving their top lip for a month.

They have agreed to take on the challenge as part of the annual Movember campaign.

The prostate cancer awareness campaign has taken the world by storm in recent years.

Men across the world will be growing outrageous moustaches throughout the month of November, starting tomorrow. Newport Knights team manager Jamie Payne said: "We really wanted to get involved to support a good cause.

"One in three people get cancer so if we can help in a tiny way then that has got to be a good thing."

Prizes

Newport Knights train regularly at Harper Adams University College and play their matches in Wrexham.

Mr Payne said he was hoping to raise about £500, and promised there would be prizes for the player sporting the tastiest 'tache.

"We'll have prizes for the person who looks the most ridiculous and the person who has raised the most," he said.

"I think some of the lads are going for the handlebars look.

"I guess we'll have to have forfeits in place for anyone who drops out as well.

"We just want to raise as much as possible, but I'd be chuffed with £500."

Movember has raised £184 million for cancer charities since its formation in 2003.
