Olympic archer Alison Williamson opens Church Stretton games
A new event showcasing sport around Church Stretton has been opened by Shropshire's five-time Olympic archer Alison Williamson.
The Church Stretton Community Games is a partnership between Church Stretton School, the local leisure centre and the badminton club.
Miss Williamson was joined at 10am on Saturday by Church Stretton mayor and town council chairman Tom Beaumont to open the event.
Visitors got the chance to see an official Olympic torch which was proudly carried by Joe Ashley, a Church Stretton School pupil, during the torch relay as it passed through Shrewsbury.
The event's opening ceremony included a choreographed classical Greek dance performed by students from Stretton School of Dance and Drama.
And visitors to the event were able to try dozens of sporting activities including archery, fencing, badminton and swimming.
The Strettons Wildlife group were also in attendance hoping to enthuse both young and old to appreciate British wildlife.
Church Stretton School governor Alan Fox, said: "Following the fantastic community spirit that was evident at the opening of the leisure centre and the community celebration that followed there was massive praise and many a call for a repeat, similar event.
"This is our answer to those calls and an opportunity to continue the celebrations of the Olympics."
