The man has not been named but is believed to be from the Newport area.

He was seriously injured when the white Fiat Punto he was driving was involved in the incident in Weston Heath, near Sheriffhales, on Tuesday.

He was flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, but died on Wednesday.

The woman riding the horse was knocked unconscious in the accident and the horse died.

It took place at around 10.25am on King Street and police are appealing for witnesses.

Constable Simon Barnes said: "Following the death of this young man, it is now crucial that we establish exactly how the collision occurred for our investigation, and also for his family.

"Although some witnesses have already come forward, we are keen to hear from anyone else who may have seen what happened or any of the vehicles beforehand.

"Three vehicles – a white Fiat Punto, green Volkswagen Passat and a white Ford Transit van – were involved in the collision, which resulted in the Punto colliding with the horse.

"Our thoughts are with both families and we are fully supporting them through this difficult time."
