Organisers have hailed one of Shropshire's largest one-day agricultural shows a huge success despite the weather after thousands of visitors poured through the gates.

Bosses of the Newport and District Agricultural Society said approximately 13,000 people had passed through the gates to enjoy a day out at the 103rd Newport Show, held on Saturday at the Chetwynd Deer Park.

Farmers from all over the country entered their champion animals into a variety of competition categories including horses, cattle, sheep and pigs, with more than £10,000 in prize money being handed out.

During the day of bumper entertainment, which ran from 8am to 6pm, a performance by motorcycle stunt team Jason Smyth Adrenaline Tour was held in the afternoon, followed by a parade of vintage tractors.

Gourmet food, beer and wine kept the crowds in good spirits in the giant food tent and the entertainment in the main arena concluded with a performance by the Newport Young Farmers' Club.

The Stafford Morris Men and the Whitchurch Dog Display Team also put on shows throughout the day.

Show President Stuart Phillips, a dairy farmer in Moreton, said: "It went very well and we had an excellent crowd. It looks like we had a good turnout.

"It was just as successful as other years. We had a beautiful morning, the sun shone all morning. About 2.30pm we caught a heavy shower for an hour but the show carried on."

This year saw lots of children involved in the events as pupils from schools from all over the area displayed their artistic and musical talents.

Students from Adams Grammar School put on an arts workshop while there was musical entertainment from Newport Girls High School and Burton Borough School.

Despite heavy rain across the county over the weekend, the show went ahead as planned.

In its 103-year history, the show has only ever been cancelled due to war or foot and mouth.
