Cataract surgery at the Wrekin Community Clinic in Telford has been suspended after four patients were given the wrong lenses.

Health bosses today said no other services at the clinic, at Euston House, were affected, and cataract surgery was continuing within The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

A spokesman said today: "All four patients received lenses that were of a slightly different power to that which was planned for their procedure.

"We deeply regret the errors that caused this to happen and are taking a range of measures to ensure they are never repeated."

Three of the cases were reported last month, and a fourth came to light during a review of the incidents.

Dr Ashley Fraser, trust medical director, added: "I apologise on behalf of the trust to patients who have been inconvenienced by the temporary suspension of cataract surgery at the Wrekin Community Clinic.

"I also reassure them that when the centre does reopen in April, they will receive a safe and excellent service."
