More than 4,000 homes and businesses in Whitchurch will be able to benefit from super-fast broadband by next spring.

BT has announced the latest phase of its £2.5 billion roll-out of broadband in the UK which includes 4,200 premises in the north Shropshire town.

More than 36,000 Shropshire premises now have access to super-fast speeds, which will rise to more than 86,000 when further upgrades are completed.

John Dovey, BT's regional director for the West Midlands, said it would bring a major economic boost and help people move into new kinds of work.

"This is a further major BT investment for Shropshire. Our roll-out of fibre broadband is going from strength to strength," he said. "In these tough economic times, this exciting technology will give a big boost to local businesses and households."

BT's local network business Openreach is making super-fast broadband available to around two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2014 using a mix of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP) technologies.

Councillor Martin Taylor Smith, Shropshire Council cabinet member for IT, said BT's investment would help create new opportunities, growth and future potential.
