A rugby player has been charged with racially abusing an opposing player after a match between Market Drayton and Telford Hornets was abandoned when one team left the field.

Hornets player Martin Rudd is alleged to have insulted one of the Drayton players during Saturday's game at Hinkshay Road, Dawley, Telford.

Players from Market Drayton RFC walked off the pitch.

The Rugby Football Union disciplinary department has investigated the incident and charged both clubs and Mr Rudd with bringing the game into disrepute.

The Hornets were reportedly 12-0 in front when Drayton walked off after an hour of the Midlands Four West (North) game.

RFU Midlands spokesman Paul Bolton said: "The clubs will now have to attend a hearing on February 7 in Coventry."
