A huge £3 million caravan park near Ludlow, which could pump £1 million into the area's economy, will open on May 9, it was announced today.

The 135-pitch, 20 acre park has been built by Shrewsbury-based Morris Leisure near the river Teme between Ludlow and Richards Castle.

Morris Leisure bosses claim the park will inject a much-needed £1million into the south Shropshire economy.

Residents initially raised concerns about possible environmental damage resulting from construction and extra traffic.

But Shropshire Council and local parish councils backed the build after developers allayed initial fears about access along the A49 and B4361.

Workmen moved on to the park in July last year. Morris Leisure chiefs estimated the park would open sometime this summer.

It will now receive caravans and motorhomes in time for the fourth annual Ludlow Spring Food Festival on May 12 and 13.

Morris Leisure's managing director, Edward Goddard, said mild weather allowed contractors to make excellent progress .

He said: "After months of waiting, we are delighted to announce that Ludlow Touring Park will be open for business on May 9 and bookings are now being accepted.

"It's an exciting time for everyone associated with the new park, which is generating interest from caravan and motorhome owners from across the UK."
