Hundreds of people have signed up to a special tree of light appeal in Church Stretton in memory of loved ones.

The tree allows people to sponsor a light for £5 and in exchange a bulb is lit up on the tree and a personal message left.

Last year the tree appeal raised around £2,900 for charity and so far this year up to £2,300 has been raised.

Ron Parish , from the Rotary Club of Church Stretton, said the tree gave solace to many people during the difficult festive period.

"Over the years this has become more than a mere Christmas tree and is now the tree of light which displays lights in remembrance of loved ones who are special to people in the area," he said.

The proceeds raised by the tree of light this year will go to the Hope House Children's Hospice, the Severn Hospice and the Midlands Air Ambulance.

To sponsor a light call Rotarian Leo Williams on (01694) 723659.
