An inquest has opened on a 21-year-old Shropshire-based soldier who died in a shooting incident on exercises at a military firing range.

Fusilier Dean Griffiths, from Market Drayton, died on September 14 at Lydd Ranges on Romney Marsh in Kent.

Mrs Rachel Redman, coroner for Central and South East Kent District, opened and adjourned the inquest pending further investigations at Dover Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The former Grove School pupil was just about to become a father, his devastated family revealed following news of the tragic incident.

About 100 people have left tributes on a Facebook page set up to honour the young soldier.

Investigations have been launched into the incident, which is believed to have happened during training with live ammunition.
