Shropshire spared worst of Hurricane Katia remnants

Parts of the UK were battered by severe gales and storms today as the remnants of Hurricane Katia hit British shores. Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales were hit by gusts of up to 70mph.

Parts of the UK were battered by severe gales and storms today as the remnants of Hurricane Katia hit British shores. Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales were hit by gusts of up to 70mph.

Shropshire escaped the worst, but gusts of up to 50mph were expected this afternoon.

Gales knocked out electricity in the Osbaston area near Oswestry at 1am. High winds hit the area in the early hours, damaging overhead power lines and knocking out the electricity to about 200 homes.

A big branch torn from a tree in Salop Road, Oswestry, delayed people going to work in the town centre.
