Public opinion in a Shropshire town is split down the middle over controversial plans to remove on-street parking spaces, new figures have revealed.

Proposals to remove parking bays in Church Stretton's High Street to widen the pavement and a counter-suggestion to leave the layout as it was were similarly backed. In total 235 people backed widening the pavement, champion- ed by the town council

And 229 want to retain the status quo, a stance backed by Church Stretton Chamber of Trade.

A further 68 people backed a radical alternative which would have seen High Street made one-way and the parking spaces retained.

The figures, made public by the town council, are part of Shropshire Council's consultation on plans for the town centre.
