COUNCIL CHIEFS today unveiled multi-million pound plans for a massive redevelopment set to change the face of Newport and create about 500 jobs.
The scheme would see Burton Borough School revamped and about 400 homes, shops and businesses built.
A supermarket and business park are both included in the plans for a site off the A518. Telford & Wrekin Council has drawn up the blueprint in partnership with developers Davidsons Developments and St Modwen.
Burton Borough was to undergo some improvements under the Building Schools for the Future programme but council spokesman Russell Griffin said a complete new teaching block would now be built.
He added: "Following resident feedback to the council, the scheme will provide open space and sports recreation facilities in Newport. This is likely to also include an all-weather pitch."
The supermarket, together with a petrol station, would be built off Station Road. Plans are also in the pipeline for a bus service connecting the new development with existing residential and commercial areas.
The council said there would also be "significant" improvements to the general environment in the town centre, such as street furniture and planters.
In addition, land off the A518 would be transformed to include a modern business park, providing much-needed new employment land in Newport as well as creating hundreds of jobs.
Councillor Richard Overton, council cabinet member for Borough Towns Development, said: "These are massive and extremely exciting plans for Newport which will bring huge benefits and complement the £1.5 million regeneration work that has already been completed. It's an extensive scheme that will provide a major boost for the town's economy.
"This is absolutely key to ensuring Newport has a vibrant and sustainable future. It is expected that the development will create more than 500 jobs as well as providing a range of housing from starter accommodation through to three and four bed family properties."
An exhibition is being held at Burton Borough School between 4pm and 8pm on July 7.
