The fire which was spotted shortly before midnight yesterday at the Longmynd Hotel in Cunnery Road, Church Stretton, is believed to have been started by hot cloths in a bin which very slowly caught light.
Lee Chapman, hotel proprietor, said 30 guests were evacuated from the building for 45 minutes.
Firefighters from Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Shrewsbury, Tweedale and Wellington fire stations were joined by three officers at the scene.
Mr Chapman said: "I'm happy to say we didn't have a huge number of residents in last night. This was a very unfortunate and regrettable incident but the fire brigade was extremely efficient and I would like to congratulate my staff for their response."
Guests were able to return to their rooms shortly after 12.30pm.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said a fire investigation team would establish the exact cause of the fire over the next few days.
