Two people have been stabbed in an incident in the centre of Church Stretton on Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses said an elderly man with a knife attacked a woman near the All Seasons clothing shop in Sandford Avenue at 2.45pm.
The man is then thought to have turned the knife on himself.
West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said yesterday: "Two people, a man and a woman, have been taken to hospital with what appear to be stab wounds following an incident in the Sandford Avenue area of Church Stretton at about 2.45pm.
"No-one else is being sought in connection with the incident.
"Police have cordoned off the area and appealed for any witnesses to contact Ludlow or Shrewsbury police station on 03003 333000.
"The woman has been taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by land ambulance and arrangements are being made to bring the man to an unknown hospital by land ambulance."
Both are said to be in a stable condition today.
The Air Ambulance is believed to have been called and part of the town centre was sealed off, with traffic being diverted away from the scene.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to Sandford Avenue in Church Stretton at 3.10pm.
"Two ambulances are in attendance. It looks like we have been called to an assault."
Rosalind Ephraim, owner of Burway Books on Beaumont Road, said she first heard about the stabbings at 3pm.
She said: "A lady came into the store and told me someone had been knifed on the high street.
"Then ambulances, police and the air ambulance arrived.
"Forensic teams came and closed down Sandford Avenue."
