A major running event in Shropshire has been saved days after being cancelled by dairy giant Muller.

It means the Muller 10K will be held in and around Market Drayton for the eighth time on May 8, but under a new name after the sponsor pulled the plug on it.

Last year, the event attracted 1,500 entrants, but Muller said it was pulling out to free up staff to work on other voluntary and community projects.

Now members of Market Drayton Running Club and the local community have pledged to stage the event.

Organiser Tim Beckett said: "One good thing to come out of this is that local people have come forward to offer their support to run the event.

"Normally this is something we would struggle with, but the response this year has been very good.

"We are delighted that the event will still be taking place on the same day and in the same place. It will probably be renamed the Market Drayton 10K."

People wishing to enter the race can do so online at www.ukresults.net from Monday or Tuesday.
