A purse containing jewellery worth more than £1,000 was stolen from a pensioner's trolley while she shopped at a Telford supermarket.

The 65-year-old was in Morrisons in Springhill, Wellington, yesterday when a woman repeatedly bumped into her.

The victim twice warned the woman to take more care before continuing to browse the aisles between 2.15pm and 2.45pm.

But she later found her black leather purse, containing several item of great sentimental value, had been stolen from inside a handbag on the child seat of the trolley.

Chris Ammonds, a spokesman for Telford police, said: "The victim is distraught. The items in the purse include an engagement ring with a diamond mount, a Welsh gold eternity ring, a yellow metal cross on a chain and a yellow metal, engraved bracelet with a message from her husband on it.

"The total value of these items could be more than £1,000 but it's the sentimental value that the victim is most upset about and therefore she is desperate for the jewellery to be returned to her."

Police said it was likely the woman who bumped into the victim stole the purse. The suspect is white, aged in her 20s, with a slim build and long, dark hair.
