Detectives were today trying to piece together the last movements of a 63-year-old Mid Wales man who was found dead at his home.

Police released a picture of Thomas Morgan, known as Tommy, who was found dead in Robin Square, in Maesyrhandir, Newtown, on Monday.

Detectives, who say they are still at this stage of the investigation treating the death as unexplained, have been granted extra time to question a local man who was arrested in connection with the death.

Detective Inspector Ian Andrews, of Dyfed-Powys Police, who is leading the investigation, said they were still trying to piece together what happened before Mr Morgan's body was discovered.

He said two addresses, including Mr Morgan's home, had been sealed off in Newtown and forensic officers had been examining both scenes for evidence.

"A key feature of the inquiry has been to try and piece together the movements of Tommy," he added.

"It is now believed that he left his home address on the Maesyrhandir Estate on the morning of Monday. We have been able to establish sightings of him on Llanidloes Road at about 8am and on Broad St in Newtown at about 9am.

"We would urge anyone who saw him between 4pm on Sunday and 9pm on Monday to get in touch as soon as possible.

"Yesterday we were granted a further 36-hours to interview the arrested local man and we have until 9pm this evening to either release or charge him.

"Our inquiries continue with friends and associates of Mr Morgan.

"A trained family liaison officer has been in contact with the family and is keeping them informed of developments.

"It is clear that Tommy was a well liked and well known local man who spent a lot of time in the town centre."

One resident of the Maesyrhandir estate, who did not wish to be named, said: "I have known Tommy for years and he was a really nice chap.

"He kept himself to himself but he was a really good bloke."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Newtown Police on 101 or 0845 3302000 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
