Controversial plans to cut down six trees in Market Drayton town centre have been backed by councillors after residents' complaints they are blocking light and affecting TV signals.

Market Drayton Town Council voted by eight to two last night in favour of Shropshire Council's plans to cut down two London plane trees outside the library in Cheshire Street.

Shropshire Council also wants to remove two maple and two ornamental trees by Queen Street car park.

But the plans have been opposed by other residents who believe the trees improve the town centre environment.

A supporting statement on behalf of the unitary council said the trees in Cheshire Street were affecting TV signals, blocking the view of town centre CCTV cameras and restricting light for residents.

The statement also said the roots of the trees were causing uneven pavement slabs and creating a slip hazard because of falling leaves.

In a letter, resident Ann Parkinson, said: "Market Drayton has few trees within the town and the few we have enhance the environment. If these trees were replaced, it would be some time before they attain a size to provide useful shade in summer."

The unitary council is expected to decide on the plans this month.
