Eleven jobs are to be created when a new call centre opens in a Mid Wales town.

Scemes, which is based in Oswestry, said it was expanding operations to Newtown in the coming weeks, a move which has been praised by the town's mayor.

Councillor Joy Jones said it was a "major boost" for a town which is reeling after the loss of jobs from a number of firms over the past 12 months.

And at the end of January, about 80 jobs are set to be lost at the Shop Direct call centre in the town.

Councillor Jones, who said the Scemes' move would be some comfort, added: "This is a fabulous start to the New Year and I hope that the 11 jobs Scemes are to create will be increased as the year goes on.

"I have spoken to the company and they are as delighted as I am. I would like to thank them for coming to Newtown and helping us get the town back on the map."

Steve Meredith, managing director of Scemes, said: "We are hoping to move to the Vastre Industrial Estate sooner rather than later and we are delighted to be expanding.

"The call centre will initially take on 11 people and we will take it from there and see how it goes, but we are thrilled that Newtown is set to welcome us."

Scemes distributes catalogues to schools offering equipment and text books.
