Golfing buggies were stolen from a Shropshire club and taken for a joyride around a nearby housing estate.

Police were called to Dalelands in Market Drayton after a group of youths was spotted driving green golf carts around the roads and causing nuisance.

One buggy was crashed into a gatepost of a house and, after a search, three other abandoned carts were found dumped in Bartons Lane.

There were reports of two of the youths leaving the area on foot towards Clifford Road while the others got into a dark-coloured car and left the scene.

The incident happened at about 11pm on Sunday.

Police Constable Mark Hobden said all four buggies had been stolen from Market Drayton Golf Club earlier that night between about 10pm and 11pm.

Each cart is worth about £1,800 and all the golf buggies recovered will be forensically examined for any evidence to identify the offenders. CCTV is also being looked at.

Staff from Market Drayton Golf Club said today they did not want to speak about the incident.

Anyone with details, who witnessed the incident or knows the identity of those involved, is urged to call police on 0300 333 3000.

Details can also be given on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where a reward is sometimes offered.
