A 17-year-old Shropshire girl who was knocked down by a car as she crossed the road has undergone vital surgery but remains in a critical condition in hospital 11 days after the incident.

Grace Currie, of Bagley, near Baschurch, suffered a serious head injury in the collision which happened on September 27.

A family friend said today: "Grace has had surgery in the last 24 to 36 hours and we are now waiting to see how it has gone.

"But the situation remains very critical."

Grace was initially rushed to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and later transferred to the University Hospital North Staffordshire in Stoke.

The sixth form student, who is studying in Shrewsbury, was struck by the car in Newtown, Baschurch, close to the Admiral Duncan pub.

Messages of support for the former Corbet School pupil have continued to flood in on social networking sites and the Shropshire Star website.
