Work to restore a historic footbridge at Shifnal Railway Station has been hit by further delays, it emerged today.

The £350,000 project was originally due to finish in May but restoration works proved far more intricate than initially thought and the opening was pushed back to July.

It has now emerged there is a problem with the lighting being installed on the bridge.

Network Rail, which owns and operates rail infrastructure, confirmed it is now due to be unveiled at the end of this month.

Spokesman Keith Lumley said: "It seems there has been an issue with the design of the lighting for the footbridge which has led to a delay.

"The good news is that the lighting is on order, is being specifically made for the footbridge and I am told it will be fitted and the bridge open by the end of the month."

Mr Lumley said rail travellers are using a temporary footbridge. He added the temporary bridge would be removed when the main one was reopened.

Work on the historic bridge, which is believed to be more than 100 years old and links the only two platforms at the station, started in March.
