The 2010 Tour of Britain is a gruelling 760-mile race around England and Wales and features some of Britain's former Olympic champions.
Yesterday stage three of the event in Newtown was officially started by town mayor Councillor Joy Jones.
Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates said he was pleased to welcome the event to the county.
"I'm delighted to see Newtown host this prestigious event, which has created a fantastic atmosphere in the town," he said.





"I congratulate the mayor and town council for their excellent work in welcoming the race here and thank Powys County Council and Visit Wales for their financial support for the event.
"I really enjoyed seeing the Tour of Britain start its 93-mile stretch from Newtown to Swansea. There were lots of people lining the streets and local schools came out to support the event and join in the excitement.
"The importance of such events to Wales cannot be underestimated."
Councillor Jones said she was extremely privileged to welcome such a renowned event to Newtown.
She said: "When I was asked to start the event I couldn't believe it, it was one of the most exciting things ever.
"I was really surprised to be asked to start one of the stages of such a major event.
"It has been an amazing experience for the town and we are just so pleased that we were able to accommodate it here."
