Warning signs are to go up on a notorious Shropshire road where two motorists have died in the last three months in a bid to slow down speeding drivers.

But angry campaigners say Shropshire Council's plans for Haughton Road in Shifnal do not go far enough.

On Monday motorcyclist Michael Hutchinson, 41, from Wolverhampton, died after his Suzuki bike collided with a blue Citroen Saxo. It comes just a couple of months after 23-year-old Richard Chetwood, from Hollinswood in Telford, was killed.

Shropshire Council principal engineer Alice Dilly said: "Improved signing and lining works are due to be implemented shortly at the location where the road significantly narrows."

But Gordon Tonkinson, a member of Shifnal Town Council said: "What we need down there are actual traffic-calming measures, speed cameras, speed bumps, anything like that which will physically slow people down."
