Hundreds of homes could be built around a south Shropshire town in the next 15 years, it emerged today.

Council officers say up to 500 homes could be built in Church Stretton and the surrounding area under plans for housing being drawn up across the county.

But the Strettons Civic Society has organised a public meeting in response to the suggestions that between 200 and 500 homes could be built in the area.

The council is running a series of public consultation sessions until June on a draft development plan for south Shropshire. It includes provision for some affordable housing in line with existing policies.

John Sumner, civic society chairman, said: "What the council is suggesting could amount to the largest expansion of the Strettons in a generation."

He added a meeting is being held on May 25 at 7pm at the Sylvester Horne Institute.

Gareth Proffitt, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said a 12-week consultation was being carried and residents could go along on May 18 to the Silvester Horne Institute between 4pm until 7.30pm to learn more about the proposals.
