Travel chaos in the wake of the UK flights ban has had a knock-on effect across Shropshire with not just stranded holidaymakers being let down and forced to cancel their events.

Pianist Nikolai Demidenko had been scheduled to play in Allerton Hall at Shrewsbury School tomorrow but he has been forced to cancel because of the crisis.

John Moore, music director at the school, said: "It is a great shame that he ended up stranded in Madrid after only going there to cover a show for someone else himself. All tickets will be refunded and the show will be rescheduled for next year."

Ironbridge resident Rory Kelly fared better and is back home after managing to get a flight out of Madrid on Tuesday but, over in America, Roger Groves, of Shrewsbury, has not been so lucky.

Mr Groves, aged 52, blogging to fellow Shrewsbury Town fans back home, said he had been due out of Miami a week ago today but his flight was grounded.

He said he had to pay an extra £210 to get himself, his wife and son back home.

Meanwhile, Chris Henderson and Ian Relf, co-directors of Creative Digital Printing, based at Oxon Business Park in Shrewsbury, are stranded in Tel Aviv.

Chris and Ian left the UK on April 11 for a five-day trip to visit HP Indigo's headquarters in Israel.

Organisers of a competition at Shrewsbury Drapers Company have extended the deadline for entries to May 31.

Student Nensi Dojaka had to be driven 2,000 miles from her home country in Albania in order to get to Shrewsbury in time for the start of the new summer term.

The 16-year-old who attends Concord College, near Shrewsbury, was taken overland by her family.

Bill Frew wrote to say: "You can add me to the map. Looks like I'm the most easterly stranded Shropshire resident as I'm currently located in Almaty, Kazakhstan and now scheduled to return to Shropshire tomorrow, Friday."

Others are not so fortunate. John and Lynn Strange are stuck in Kuala Lumpur.

They have been there since the the 18th of April and their next available flight is 29th April, said daughter Clare Lewis.

"They have been offered no help at all," she added. "Luckily for them they have a credit card. So far they have spent £2000 on hotel and food bills.

"With another week left to wait for a flight something needs to be done to help them and other people who have no money and have spent days sleeping in the airport."
