The family of a 23-year-old man, who almost died after he was stabbed at a 16th birthday party in Shropshire, today revealed surgeons had been forced to remove his spleen as a result of the attack.
Stuart Corfield lost six pints of blood and spent two days in intensive care at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after he was stabbed twice in the stomach at the party in Rushbury, near Church Stretton, on Friday night.
Today Mr Corfield's grandmother, Jean Corfield, said it had been "touch and go" at the time but he was now making good progress and recovering in hospital.
Mr Corfield, who is from the Church Stretton area, was moved from intensive care on Sunday night and onto a general ward at the hospital.
It is believed that he could be in hospital for some time.
John Corfield, a distant relative, said they were horrified that an incident such as this could happen in such a quiet, rural area of the county.
He added: "It is absolutely awful. At one point the family thought they were going to lose him but now he is on the mend.
"He has lost his spleen but apparently you can live without that. It will take some time for him to recover and from the shock of it as well.
"I was born and bred round here and you just don't expect something like this to happen," he added.
A youth, who was found hiding nearby on the night of the incident, has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of assault.
Detective Sergeant Dave Meyer, from West Mercia Police, said the stabbing happened while there was a party going on at the village hall.
He said there were about 200 people invited to the party.
He said: "A youth was found hiding nearby and was arrested on suspicion of assault."
He added there was a large number of young people at the party and he urged anyone with information to telephone Ludlow CID on 0300 333 3000 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they wished to remain anonymous.
Harry Walters, chairman of the village hall, confirmed that it had been a private event for a 16th birthday.
