A motorist was killed when his car plunged down an embankment in a crash close to the Shropshire border.

The 38-year-old man died when his silver Peugeot left the A5/A483 Chirk bypass near Oswestry.

The accident yesterday shut the bypass for several hours. Traffic was diverted through Chirk, causing huge congestion in the Welsh border town.

The collision happened on the bypass between the Gledrid and the Halton roundabouts.

Paramedics and police officers were called to the crash just before noon after a passer-by spotted the car partly hidden behind trees. The motorist was declared dead at the scene.

Police say they do not know how long the car had been there and are appealing for witnesses.

North Wales Ambulance Service spokesman Adam Johnson said: "We were called at 11.45am to a single vehicle down an embankment. A 38-year-old Wrexham man was declared dead at the scene."

Meanwhile, three adults and a child escaped serious injury after a two-car collision on a main road near Market Drayton.

The occupants of both saloon cars involved walked away from the incident, which happened on the A41 at Hinstock at about 12.30pm yesterday.
