A motorist was killed when his vehicle left the A483 Chirk bypass near Oswestry and crashed down an embankment today.

The one-vehicle fatal crash shut the bypass, the main route, which takes thousands of motorists from Shropshire into North Wales, for several hours.

Traffic was diverted through Chirk, causing huge congestion in the Welsh border town.

Paramedics and police officers were called to the crash just before noon but the motorist was declared dead at the scene.
