Heavy rain and rapidly thawing snow saw the risk of flooding become the latest weather hazard across the country today.

In Shropshire flood warnings were lifted and barriers taken down, but there were still hazardous conditions caused by the cold weather with motorists urged to use caution after a driver skidded on ice and collided with a wall at about 7am in Berwick Wharf, near Uffington, leading to the road being closed for about two hours.

And the B4179 between Worfield and Chesterton was also still closed this morning five days after a landspill from a nearby field.

Shropshire Council today also issued a warning to motorists not to use a south Shropshire road which runs over the Long Mynd.

Early reports yesterday indicated there had been a landslip on The Burway near Church Stretton, but this was later downgraded to a blockage caused by snow.

Chris Fisher, highways manager, said: "The Burway has been closed since December. The road can be very dangerous in icy and snowy conditions.

"The road has been blocked by a combination of snow and soil and is therefore impassable. We will need to wait until this snow has cleared before investigating the extent of the damage."
