Shifnal Town Council heard last night that the Mayor of Shifnal, Councillor Les Jones, may never have legally been mayor because he was absent from May's meeting when councillors elected him.
Councillor Jones also verbally resigned in November from the town council but returned to chair last night's meeting insisting he was still mayor because he had never resigned in writing to the council's clerk.
But councillors objected and voted to abandon the meeting until legal advice could be sought on his position.
Michelle Wilson, council clerk, said she sought legal advice from the Shropshire Association of Local Councils and the National Association of Local Councils which stated Councillor Jones was not legally elected mayor because of his absence at May's meeting.
