The application to increase the plots at Ludford Park Meadow Of Remembrance near Ludford Cemetery in Park Road was expected to be approved by planners this afternoon.

It would mean an additional 51 burial plots and 173 cremation plots on top of the 240 original spaces.

But one of the conditions of the original planning permission was that the number of burial plots should not exceed 240.

Applicant Lin Dalton today said the fact that green burials had increased in popularity was one reason for the application.

She added: "When planning permission was granted five years ago there was a misunderstanding within the wording.

"We bought it 12 months ago but when the previous owner said there were going to be graves he did not allow for the burial of ashes plots.

"When we took over we were a little bit unsure about this so we went back to the planners. We are just trying to get that condition changed so we are free to use the whole area.

"We have had a great response.

"These green burials are growing around the country, they are totally different because they leave it free for people to choose."

She added: "The area is not consecrated which means we are available for everybody. It is all about choice."
