Firefighters covered the vehicle in foam amid fears spilt petrol would ignite after the Honda Civic ended upside down on the cattle fence.

Emergency services were called to the scene, at the junction of the A525 and Dark Lane, about three miles from Whitchurch, yesterday, at about 5.15pm.

The male Civic driver was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, with a suspected collar bone injury.

The female driver of the other vehicle, a green Hyundai Amica, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Fire crews from Whitchurch, Prees and Wellington and the incident commander from Shrewsbury attended the crash scene.

Ian Johnson, Whitchurch crew commander, said: "The male driver's car had overturned in a field and landed on an electric cattle fence."
