Gin wheel at county clay mine

According to the note with this print this is "Broseley Deep Pit (Clay Mine) gin wheel, c.1945".

The word gin is derived from "engine" and this vertical shaft would have been turned by a horse or horses walking round and round in a circle, driving machinery far below in the mine.

This is another picture recently loaned to Shrewsbury historian and author David Trumper, who has let us share in this part of history.

According to the Broseley Local History Society website, Broseley Deep Pit was owned by Broseley Tileries Co and mined fireclay. The mine had been abandoned by the time our picture was taken.
