Dean Gordon, 32, used a mobile phone - which police and prison authorities did not know about - from his prison cell.

He contacted fellow conspirators, including county businessman Naseer Zam- an, 38. At Wolverhampton Crown Court today, Judge Michael Challinor said Gordon had been the "faithful" lieutenant of Zaman.

He told Gordon: "You were not only a servant of Zaman but a very important channel of communication.

"You encouraged this conspiracy and clearly you contemplated a significant amount of drugs being imported. You described this as 'the real deal' and you entered and furthered this conspiracy while serving your sentence."

Gordon, formerly of Teal Close, Stirchley, was jailed in 2004 for nine years for conspiring to supply ecstasy and crack cocaine.

He and Zaman, of Abbey Road, Lilleshall, admitted conspiring to import heroin between August 2005 and September 2006. Zaman al- so admitted assisting a man, who he knew or believed had conspired to supply class A drugs, to prevent the man's arrest and prosecution.

Zaman and Harvinder Singh Mattu, 34, admitted conspiring with five other people to import cocaine into the UK between July and September 2005. Mattu, of Uxbridge, Middlesex, was today jailed for seven years.

Sentence on Zaman has been adjourned until the completion of the trial of two other defendants, who deny conspiracy charges. Zaman remains in custody.
