A pub boss was tied up and robbed when a gang of men burst in on him while he slept at his Shropshire premises. The three men threatened Richard Drewett, general manager of The Wheel at Worfield, near Bridgnorth, before escaping with cash trays.
They broke into the pub at about 4.45am yesterday. Detective Sergeant Allan Crossley, the investigating officer, said the gang restrained the manager and made off with an undisclosed quantity of money. The men are not believed to have been armed.
Mr Drewett, who suffered minor injuries, eventually managed to free himself before calling police.
Staff at the The Wheel today refused to speak about the incident but the pub was open for business as usual just hours after the robbery. Neighbouring businesses said they had not heard about the raid.
Mr Crossley said: "Fortunately, the general manager was not seriously hurt. He suffered some bruising and was seen by paramedics but required no further treatment.
"This was an extremely serious incident carried out during the early hours. It's possible passers-by may have seen something suspicious at or near the premises during the time leading up to the incident at around 4.45am."
Mr Crossley said the manager was left with his hands tied but managed to free himself soon after and call the police.
The robbers also stole several black plastic cash till trays and a Nokia N65 mobile phone.
"We are particularly anxious to trace the trays should anyone find them discarded," he added.
"If anyone has information which might assist the police inquiry, I would appeal to them to please contact Bridgnorth police on 08457 444888 as a matter of urgency.
"Information can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, for which a reward may be paid."
The pub, which is on the main Wolverhampton to Bridgnorth road, shut in 2005 because of health and safety fears after more than 1,000 bikers turned up to its Wednesday night meet.
It reopened under new ownership at the beginning of December last year after a £1 million facelift.
