A McDonald's restaurant in Shrewsbury is set for a £300,000 refurbishment which could create more than seven jobs, it was revealed today.

The restaurant at Meole Brace Retail Park will undergo the work later this year. It will see the building remodelled with new furniture and modern facilities. It comes only days after the restaurant was refused permission to open for almost 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Planners at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council feared the proposals would lead to an increase in crime.

Bob Beckett, franchisee of the Shrewsbury restaurant, said the investment would enhance its reputation and would see it become one of the most modern McDonald's outlets in the country. He said: "To further enhance our customer enjoyment we will be totally remodelling the Meole Brace restaurant in the latter half of this year to project the new McDonald's brand image by the use of subtle colours, modern design and comfortable furniture.

"The investment is in the region of £300,000 and I expect a 10 per cent increase in the number of jobs which will all be local ones."

Mr Beckett took over the franchise in 1998 and the restaurant now employs about 71 staff.

He said: "Our aim is to enhance the good name of McDonald's and Shrewsbury by providing one of the most up-to-date restaurants in the UK for the provision of the best hot fresh food, meeting the needs of our customers in a modern and enjoyable environment."

Mr Beckett said he also disagreed with the decision by borough planning officers to refuse permission for him to open the restaurant from 6am to 3am two days a week.

The council said it could lead to people being around the retail park into the early hours, increasing the risk of crime.

But Mr Beckett said there were no problems he was aware of and was now considering an appeal.
