Shropshire Star

Comments are unfair

In response to Mr Peter Jones's letter in last Saturday's Star, I would like to say that his comments do an injustice to many people in our community who participated in the Entente Florale Europe and Communities in Bloom (International Challenge) competitions.

While the borough council provides the framework for these events, there is tremendous input from many community groups, businesses and individuals.

We do not freeze out any area of the town and where it is not practical to actually visit a particular area we do attempt to highlight it by inclusion in our portfolio and displays of photographs.

This year we were required to provide a video presentation of the town and in this, for example, we included the Grange Day Centre at Harlescott, Radbrook Primary School and Monkmoor Sewerage Works.

We brought the judges into the town centre via Sundorne and Monkmoor, they toured a number of places including Copthorne Country Park, Shelton Hospital, Edgefield Green Sheltered Housing, Abbey Foregate and Greenfields.

I am fully conscious of the need to cover additional costs from sponsorship and we have been particularly fortunate in the amount of sponsorship we have received.

We were not just representing ourselves but Great Britain, having been selected to do so by the Royal Horticultural Society.

I am neither a councillor nor a council employee, just an individual who believes Shrewsbury is a great place to live and we should promote all that is good as well as putting right that which is not so good.
