I was amused and saddened to read the story from the couple who were being asked by BT to pay something in the order of £14,000 for a second phone line, because BT had run out of line capacity.

If I recall the story correctly, they already have broadband on the first line, in which case the simple thing for them to do would be to utilise a Voip (Voice over IP service) such as that offered by Vonage.

The monthly cost for this would be £18.99 for a business service and from £5.99 for their residential service. Both include unlimited calls to UK landline numbers.

A Voip adaptor would typically provide initially two lines and Voip PBX's permit multiple extensions, using broadband over a single BT or cable line.

I have no affiliation with Vonage and there are many alternate Voip providers offering similar services.
