Why follow the legal motorist?

Driving to work at 5.30am one morning, I was followed from Telford town centre by a police car.
Knowing that he was there, I chose the wrong lane at the Queensway interchange and, not wanting to cut across the lanes when the lights changed, I headed instead for Stafford Park in the knowledge that I could continue to the next interchange, but on passing the fire station I was pulled over.
The policeman enquired if I was lost. I explained that I was on my way to work and the name of my works and location. The short conversation was polite and relaxed and I was allowed on my way.
However, when I reached Halesfield I was overtaken by a Michael Schumacher-type in a white sports car easily pushing 60 to 70mph in a 40mph area.
Would the police like to follow me every morning all the way to work so that they can stop all the cyclists who ride with no lights or bright clothing, the ones I have to look out for, and at the same time catch the white car who has overtaken me on no fewer than six occasions this year on the same road?
If nothing else, I would feel better knowing that if I choose to take a different route to work I won't be under suspicion.
