Proof that theatre is jewel

I was privileged to attend two shows at Oakengates theatre recently.

The first one was The Central Band of the Royal Air Force. This was a show to be remembered with members of the Royal Air Force proving they could play musical instruments as well as defending our shores.

They played magnificently under the directorship of Squadron Leader: Gordon Bain BA LRAM ARCM MCIL RAF. This band captivated the audience with their selection of music and, yes, they did play The Dambusters March, together with a tribute to the late Glen Miller.

We were honoured by the attendance of Simon Weston OBE, a very good guest speaker who - in spite of his horrific injuries during the Falklands War - is a man with a great sense of humour. This concert was held in aid of the Royal Star & Garter home soon to be built in Solihull.

The second show, Rolling Back the Years, took us old 'uns back down Memory Lane. Again, very enjoyable to listen to. The cast played brilliantly, unfortunately only to a small audience.

Now a show that is worth attending is Brendan Shine in concert on March 18. This show will be presented by Kath Evans in aid of the County Air Ambulance.

The Place, the complex where the Oakengates theatre is situated, has many faults but the quality of the shows is certainly not one of them. It is the jewel in the crown of Oakengates.
