People travelling home to Highley, near Bridgnorth, became stuck on Chelmarsh Bank on Friday at about 6pm after heavy snow made driving nearly impossible.

As some motorists began abandoning their cars, volunteers collected their tractors and 4x4 to try to pull vehicles out.

Helper Leon Aspin said he went to get his pick-up truck after he became stuck and then started helping other people get off the bank.

"There were a lot of local farmers helping out as a lot of cars were stuck," he said. "I went for my pick-up truck to get my car out and then helped some other people. There were quite a few people helping out."

He added: "When I got back at about 10pm, I could hear one of the farmers Dan Maiden and some of his family clearing the streets of Highley with his snowplough."

Leon's mother Ruth Bannister, who was one of the motorists rescued, said: "We were stuck in a queue of cars at the bottom of the bank. It was a nightmare as people tried to get up and got stuck in the snow.

"There were so many cars stuck. Somebody pulled us out and then my son and a few other people were out there until about 10pm moving cars."

She added: "There was such a good community spirit.

"It just goes to show that not everyone is selfish and there is still a spirit of human kindness in the world, despite what we see and hear continually in the media."
