Speeding in streets 'low risk'

For several years residents of Innage Road and The Innage, in Shifnal, have complained to councillors and the police about the excessive speeds of traffic along Innage Road.

Repeatedly, we have been told that this road is regarded as of "low risk" as it is not an accident hotspot.

And so we are to believe that if there are no accidents, then motorists must not be speeding in that given area . . . if only it were true.

On a daily basis residents have to put up with excessive speeds, cars skidding and parked cars being damaged by passing vehicles.

Motorcyclists seem to liken this road to the Isle of Man, not sleepy Shifnal.

How sad it was then that a person visiting the area was knocked over and killed in Innage Road recently. It is not public knowledge if speed was a contributory factor or not in this case and this must be pointed out.

Imagine our shock, however, to see police officers operating a mobile speed enforcement camera along Innage Road within a couple of weeks of this terrible accident. What we need in this area is for local councillors to petition for a speed camera or for law enforcement to at least be consistent.

There has not been a police presence in this area for months, despite Albrighton council paying for a mobile speed camera.

The community should not have to put up with the continual "shutting the gate after the horse has bolted" approach.
